Two things struck me today as I am feverishly writing the script for our upcoming Abraham DVD (Footprints of God series).
First, when God punished the Jews by sending them into exile in Babylon it was the ultimate punishment and insult. Babylon was the site of Bable and the confusion of languages. It was also in Mesopotamia, the homeland of their forefather Abraham. He was a pagan in a pagan land until the God of Glory called him and brought him to the promised land – Israel.
But the Jews rebelled against God and served pagan gods like the nations around them. So God sent them back to Square One, to Babylon where their forefather Abraham originally came from. They were sent as exiles back to their pagan beginning.
It was like God saying, “OK, you want to be pagans and worship false gods, then go back to your ancestors, lose your land and your blessings I promise to Abraham when HE lived in Mesopotamia– when he abandoned the foreign gods and chose to follow me. We will start over again.”
Very interesting thing to meditate on.
Second, there is a contrast between tent pegs and altars in the story of Abraham and the patriarchs. Here is how I am wording it in the script (to be shot at Bethel in Israel in June):
“Abram pitched his tent somewhere here. The patriarchs lived in temporary shelters—they never built houses. Tents were dismantled; stakes were pulled up and they were again on the move. Abram was a pilgrim and a model for us. We know our life on this earth is temporary. We are not citizens here— we are travelers too, awaiting our true citizenship in heaven.
“But the altar is permanent. The altar is not dismantled. The altar represents the permanence of God. When the tent comes down and moves, the altar still stands. Though our journey through this live is temporary God and the altars remain firm and steadfast. They are always there and we can always return to them.”
Pray for me as I work every free minute to get this script prepared for filming in June when we go with our filming crew to Israel and the Palestinian territories and also Turkey to get the footage for this video. Thanks.
