Set a Date for the Family – Watch this Movie

by Steve Ray on September 7, 2019

Janet and I have never been busier, so this Saturday afternoon we took time to cook Janet one of her favorite dinners and watch a favorite old movie – black and white no less. After two hours of laughing, singing and even a tear or two we thought we should share it with you. Janet, my wife of few words, said ”Good dinner movie Honey and what a great movie.”

What was the movie?  It is a marvelous “Catholic” movie. If you’re Catholic you’ll LOVE it, if you’re not a Catholic you will LOVE it and even if you’re just a lover of good movies you will LOVE it. It shows how Catholics and Baptists can work together and everybody in the town joins in. You’ve gotta love the nuns!

50D4C213-7883-4ECB-81A2-663DF98407ECThe movie is entitled “The Lilies of the Field.“ It stars Sidney Poitier and a group of prayerful immigrant German nuns and Mexicans in the desert out West. Poitier won an Academy Award for his performance (back when Academy Awards meant something).  The Mother Superior reminds me a little bit of mother Angelica :-)

I am sure there are a number of sources where you can get this movie, but we bought it on iTunes. (By the way, we discontinued cable, and all other TV sources decades ago and now just watch good movies and fun family and Catholic fare). If you haven’t cut the TV off yet and you’re a Catholic family, I suggest you do it sooner than later later for the salvation of your kids.

If you want to see a list of some of our favorite movies and the favorites of others as well visit my website here.

Steve, thank you so much for you, your family & your ministry. Your steadfastness has help me in my faith journey (I am a revert). Your story was a part of my journey coming back and discovering the incredible beauty of my Catholic faith. How blessed are we! I too got rid of my TV & radio; about two years ago & have never regretted it. I watch Catholic Answers, Journey Home & selected videos from my favourite speakers & conferences on my laptop & spend more time reading. TV etc is truly soul destroying!. May God continue to bless you all. Allison Smith ?

That is also one of our favorite Catholic family movies! I always wondered if this was the origin of the folksy rendition of the “Amen” chorus?!

Thank you for this suggestion! I would also like to suggest “Formed.org” as a great source of Catholic movies, audio dramas, audible books and great talks. We discontinued Netflix this summer and this has filled the gap beautifully.
